Day 4 - Solstice
Andare - The court jester
Since we don't have solstice in Sri Lanka I thought of remaking one famous tale of Andare but with my imagination.
One day the king thinks to himself “I am powerful, yet I cant stop night and day. So he announces if anyone in the village can bring the sun to him, they will get a big fortune.
So the royal court jester comes with a witty plan and says “I can do it, but I need to develop my body and mind so I desires to receive, for one month, nutritious food, drinks and generally being able to live a comfortable life; the same wealthy lifestyle as the king is leading.
So Andare lives like a king for one month. One day he tells his king: "my job is only to bring the sun, right?" "Yes", the king replies.
The day is coming; many, many people come to look at this work, they expect a superhuman action. Andare is striding to the middle of the land, music and drums play like a parade, many people stand beside the field and clap their hands to the beat of the drums. People from all surrounding villages and the king and ministers have come to witness this miraculous deed. When everyone is silent, he declares: "I want four strong men." The king supplies four strong men. Andare tells the four strong men: “Lift the sun and keep on my shoulder I will bring it to the castle”.
Andare was a court jester whose witty acts and satirical comments entertained both royals and commoners alike. Most of the stories, have a comical ending with Andare getting the better of villagers and even the King.
