Today is Poisson d’Avril – April Fish Day, or as we English speakers say, April Fool’s Day! No one really knows why April Fish Day in France. Some historians say that April 1st was the end of the fishing season, and as a ‘prank’, people would hang fish on the backs of fishermen to mock their inability to work. Sounds highly unlikely to me! Others say it relates to the change of the marking of the start of the new year from from April to January in 1582. It had been traditional to give an April new year gift - a fish was good if it coincided with Lent when meat was avoided by Christians, and it became a thing to give fake fish on 1st April. Nowadays, kids pin paper fish on the backs of people who pretend not to notice for fun!
(They're not really fish flavoured eclairs 😉 )
