In Buddhist monasteries, large ponds for drinking and bathing were essential, and streams and ponds added beauty to these sacred spaces. Many water bodies also served as natural coolers, keeping the dry zone’s atmosphere refreshing and humid. The gentle sound of flowing water and the sight of its still, serene presence helped purify the mind, offering inspiration for meditation and inner calm. Water features were thus indispensable to every Buddhist monastery, particularly those dedicated to meditation.

A perfect example of this masterful utilisation of water can be found at the Western Monasteries, or Thapovana of Anuradhapura, also known as the Batahira Arama or Thapasarama, where the integration of water was essential to both functionality and spiritual practice. These buildings are known as Piyangal or Padhanaghara, an exquisite architectural feature of the ancient Sinhalese of Anuradhapura.
