A productive discussion was held at the Urban Council of Kattankudy, bringing together the Chairman, Officers of the Urban Council, and the Health Unit for an engaging dialogue on the findings from the Mapping of Informal Waste Management in Batticaloa project.

The session highlighted the critical role of informal waste collectors in strengthening waste recovery systems and advancing the circular economy. Project partners SPM Foundation shared valuable insights, recommendations, and forward-looking strategies for the next phase of the initiative, focusing on building a more inclusive and efficient waste management system in the district.

The discussion was well received, and the Urban Council was encouraged to actively integrate the informal waste sector into its waste recovery processes. This collaboration is key to driving sustainable and holistic waste management solutions within the city.

The Mapping of Informal Waste Management in Batticaloa project was conducted to develop a comprehensive understanding of the district’s existing waste systems. Through a collaboration between Kabadiwalla Connect, SPM Foundation, and the Lanka Environment Fund, the project carried out detailed street-by-street surveys of small scrap shops, large informal waste workers, and processors across Batticaloa. These efforts generated valuable insights into how the informal sector contributes significantly to keeping our cities clean.

With support from Depeche Mode x Hublot through Conservation Collective, the initiative also mapped supply chains to strengthen End Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks, recognize the often-unaccounted labour within informal economies, and identify opportunities to increase the recovery of high-value plastics across the district.

As part of the Mapping of Informal Waste Management in Batticaloa Project, We conducted a Health Camp on 28th February 2026 for informal neighbourhood waste workers in collaboration with the Medical Office of Health, Batticaloa (Moh Batticaloa).

This initiative was organized to support the health and wellbeing of informal waste workers, who play a vital role in keeping our cities clean and contributing to waste recovery systems. During the camp, workers received basic medical checkups including blood pressure, diabetes screening, BMI measurement, and screening for symptoms of leprosy.

The programme also included an awareness session conducted by the Medical Officer Dr. E. Uthayakumar and the Supervising Public Health Inspector (PHI) T.Manimaran, focusing on occupational health risks, to***co use, infectious diseases, and non-communicable diseases. In addition, medical kits were distributed to the participants.

Through a collaboration between Kabadiwalla Connect, .foundation.2024, and , the project carried out street-by-street surveys of small scrap shops, large informal waste workers, and processors across Batticaloa, generating critical insights into how the informal sector contributes to keeping our cities clean.

With support from Depeche Mode x Hublot through Collective, this initiative aims to strengthen Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks, recognize the largely unaccounted labour within informal economies, and identify opportunities to increase the recovery of discarded high-value plastics across the district.

We are grateful to all partners and participants who contributed to making this health camp meaningful and impactful for the informal waste worker community in Batticaloa.
