In the countryside of Siem Reap, not far from Angkor Wat is the small village of Khork Tnot. To support the local community there, the Stepping Stones Cambodia school and project arranges additional classes of English, Khmer, health, food, and more to more than 500 children and young adults. The director of Stepping Stones is Em Kang and Chance2Study had supported him with his English language skills and an Economics program at Build Bright University in the past.

Last week we visited Stepping Stones again, after a long time. We were welcomed as warm as always, the local children are waving to us, especially with our kids in the tuk tuk. Em Kang was waiting for us with a big smile at the gate when we arrived. It felt great to be at the project site again. The school looks still very well maintained, with even a new parking lot for motorbikes and a tall internet tower to provide wifi for the school and the community. The big water tank that was installed seven years ago, still works very well and the water quality is tested periodically.

Em Kang tells us about the past years, what happened during the covid pandemic and the struggles of the people in the country. Many businesses had to stop, students without proper internet connections could not attend the online classes so had to stop their studies. Due to lockdown tourism plummeted to zero and many jobs were lost. In the community they tried to continue classes as much as possible and luckily, they were able to sustain. He also tells us that there is a lot of social work they provide in the community, how to deal with the various challenges. We admire him how he dedicates his life to contribute all that he can to the community.

Then he showed us around the project. Our kids loved the new playground and the soccer field. We look forward to a continuation of our partnership.

Thanks again and keep up the amazing job, Kang & Stepping Stones Cambodia team!
