Police Seize Six Million Tramadol Strips as South Sudan Battles Rising Drug Abuse Among Youth

South Sudan Police have seized approximately six million strips of Tramadol and arrested several suspected drug dealers during a major anti-narcotics operation in the border town of Nimule.

The Inspector General of Police described the operation as one of the country's largest anti-drug crackdowns, saying it reflects the government's intensified efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and curb the growing abuse of narcotics.

Tramadol is a prescription opioid painkiller intended for the treatment of moderate to severe pain under medical supervision. However, it has become one of the most widely abused drugs in South Sudan, particularly among young people. Many teenagers and youths misuse the drug in search of a temporary feeling of euphoria, increased energy, prolonged wakefulness, or to cope with stress, despite its serious health risks.

Medical experts warn that prolonged Tramadol abuse can lead to addiction, seizures, breathing problems, mental health disorders, poor judgment, and even fatal overdoses. The increasing availability and misuse of the drug have become a growing public health and security concern across the country.

Police say investigations into the latest seizure are ongoing, and those arrested are expected to face legal action as authorities continue their nationwide campaign against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
