Kenya is full of selfish and entitled leaders who seem to forget why they were elected in the first place. When Gen Z took to the streets on 25th June 2024 to protest against the Finance Bill, the president publicly rejected the bill, seemingly to calm the anger of the people. But once the protests died down, the same rejected proposals were quietly split into pieces and passed anyway. The audacity is unbelievable.

How can you claim to represent citizens while ignoring their voices and pushing your own agenda? Leaders are elected to listen to the people, not to act like parents who decide what is “best” for everyone without consultation.

And if we are being honest, look at where our leaders suddenly become efficient and united. During the impeachment of former DP Rigathi Gachagua, the process moved with incredible speed. They wanted him out, and within no time he was removed and politically abandoned. That alone shows how quickly they can act when it serves their interests.

To many Kenyans, it feels like the desires of politicians matter more than the voices of ordinary citizens. Ironically, the impeachment only made Gachagua louder. Since leaving office, he has consistently criticized the government and exposed internal political battles, and many people are paying close attention to what he says.

At the end of the day, leadership is about service. A true leader is elected to serve the people, not to be served by them.

Kenya is truly a fascinating country. Imagine having 12 nominated MPs in the National Assembly, each reportedly taking home around KSh600,000 monthly after deductions. That amounts to nearly KSh7.2 million every month, at a time when millions of young people remain unemployed.

What makes it even more painful for many Kenyans is the feeling that some of these positions add little direct value to ordinary citizens, yet the same amount of money could pay about 360 deserving people a salary of KSh20,000 each.

These are the kinds of realities that continue to fuel calls for serious constitutional and governance reforms in Kenya.
Like Hon.Caleb Amisi has been saying all along, it is time for economic renaissance. We can't be blinded by the political class.
