Weapon of mass destruction (WMD)
Increasing wars between countries in the 20th and 21st century led made armies to advance their technology and weapons to improve their ability to win. Advancement of technology saw the invention of the weapon of mass destruction in the 20th century. Carus (2012) defined weapon of mass destruction as a weapon with ability to cause destruction, death on a large-scale and randomly. Military experts argue that availability of weapon of mass destruction to hostile states pose a significant threat to other countries.
According to Taylor and Swanson (2016), chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives are considered to be weapon of mass destruction owing to the capability of causing harm or killing a large number of people and destroy structures. The abbreviation CBRNE was used as a standard way of describing forms of weapons of mass destruction (Taylor & Swanson, 2016). This kind of weapon was first used in World War I. Chemical weapon was first regarded as a weapon of mass destruction in modern warfare when they were used World War I. Germany introduced chemical warfare in April 1915 when they launched chemical attacks on Algerian and French troops in Belgium killing 5000 of them. Taylor and Swanson (2016) pointed out that the bombing of Oklahoma City in 1995 was the first distinguished form CBRNE attacks that took place in The US soil.
Liivoja (2015) claimed that the technological revolution in the recent past has enhanced arms race and production of nuclear weapons. Today, the US, North Korea, Iran, and Russia are making nuclear weapons as they scramble to have the lethal military (Bentley, 2014, p. 69). With increased terrorist attack in the current times, people have become concerned about the effects of radioactive material which may affect them during such incidents. As a result, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has taken a step always to provide help to the state, territories and local governments in safeguarding the health of the people and provide measures they can take to decrease exposures to the radiation (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2000).
