Emotional Mastery

A colleague questions your decision or let's say your partner criticizes you. In today's world we're encouraged to react immediately and have an opinion about everything. Emotional mastery is not about suppressing emotions. It's about creating space between what happens to us and how we respond. That pause however brief is where wisdom lives.

Much of our stress comes not from events themselves but from the meaning we attach to them. The strongest men (indeed all leaders regardless of gender) are not those who never feel anger or disappointment. They are those who have learned that every emotion deserves acknowledgement, but not every emotion deserves authority.
