A Call to Protect Freedom of Worship in Kenya

Dear Kenyans, Christians in Kenya and diaspora,

I'd like to highlight key constitutional safeguards that protect our freedom of worship:
Article 8 : Kenya has no State religion, ensuring faith is a personal choice. Matters of faith should be discussed by recognized umbrella bodies and senior faith leaders, not by the Executive or Legislature. Any intent to amend Article 8 should be transparently declared.

Articles 20 & 21 All State organs must respect, protect, promote, and fulfil our Bill of Rights, including freedom of worship.

I urge all Kenyans who value faith and freedom to reject this Bill in its entirety. For our nation and future generations, let’s not stay silent as our spiritual freedom is at risk. The body of Christ is under siege—let’s stand together.

Fellow Believers in Kenya and the Diaspora, defending the Freedom of worship and spread of the Gospel is our responsibility.

Jesus warned in Matthew 13:24-27 about the enemy sowing weeds among the wheat while we sleep. Today, we see this played out as pretenders infiltrate the church, causing harm. Yet, "the gates of Hades will not overcome it" (Matthew 16:18). Christianity is a way of life, not just a religion; let us stand firm.

1. The proposed Religious Affairs Commission raises concerns:
They include, Risk of State Influence because Four of the nine commissioners, including the Chairperson are appointed by the President, this could lead to undue interference in religious matters, contradicting our Constitution’s spirit. This is unprecedented since independence.

2. False Solution: The proposed commission seems to have a hidden agenda designed to meddle with worship, claiming to address issues already fully handled by existing church structures and the laws of Kenya.

3. Unnecessary Burdens: The fines in the Religious Bill 2024 are a great Threat to religious Freedoms, further it jeopardizes our guaranteed freedom of worship. It is meant to silence the church, interfere with liturgy, and add costs through burdensome fees for registration, inspections, among others, that could cripple small churches financially

4. Pretenders vs. True Faith: Scripture warns of "sheep in wolves’ clothing" (Matthew 7:15). We need discernment, prayer, and self-regulation, not more laws whose intentions are suspect.

As the church of Christ, we should:

1. Reject the Bill entirely: Advocate for self-regulation, leveraging existing structures.

2. Use existing tools: Let the government handle fraud through laws and institutions, without extra burdens on Kenyans and churches.

3. Uphold the Constitution: Protect Articles 8, 20 & 21, 27(4) and 32, ensuring separation of church and state. State involvement violates these provisions.

4. Unite in action:
We must Pray for wisdom.
And Engage leaders, to advocate for faith and freedom with discernment.
5. Rise in ecumenical spirit, addressing issues with love for Christ and His church, no greed or ulterior motives.
6. Reject collective judgment and punishment for the body of Christ.

Let’s stand together, fighting as one body, protecting the Gospel’s freedom.
