NRT is made up of 43 community conservancies in Northern Kenya, and was established by the communities to better manage their natural resources. The Trust empowers these communities to be self-sufficient and well governed, helping them to manage livestock grazing in harmony with wildlife and to diversify their livelihoods through tourism and other enterprises.

On 21st May 2026, through support from the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia, we officially handed over 15 outboard engines, each with an output of 15 horsepower, to benefit 75 fishers in Kiunga Ward, Lamu County, under our Fish to Market (FTM) Project and Gear Exchange Program (GEP).

The new engines will enable fishers to safely access offshore fishing grounds beyond the reef, helping reduce pressure on nearshore marine ecosystems while promoting more sustainable fishing practices.

The intervention is expected to support ecosystem recovery, improve access to markets for sustainably caught seafood, and strengthen livelihoods for coastal fishing communities across the Lamu–Tana Seascape.

This milestone forms part of NRT’s broader Nature-based Solutions work and ongoing efforts to support sustainable fisheries management, marine conservation, and resilient community livelihoods along Kenya’s northern coast.

The event was officiated by the Deputy Governor of Lamu County, H.E. Dr. Mbarak Mohamed, alongside officials from the County Government of Lamu, and representatives from the Royal Danish Embassy, The Nature Conservancy in Africa, Fauna & Flora, Kenya Wildlife Service, the Lamu County Commissioner’s Office, beach management units, civil society organizations, community members, and other government agencies.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Royal Danish Embassy, and all partners supporting community-led marine conservation and sustainable livelihoods along Kenya’s coast.
