No Yelling Parent
09/07/2026
Have you ever been so angry in the moment that you slapped your child’s back, squeezed their arm too hard, or grabbed them more firmly than you meant to?
And then maybe a part of you thought, “It wasn’t that bad.”
I get why.
Many of us grew up in a time when those things were brushed off. A slap was called discipline. Fear was called respect. Obedience was called good parenting.
So when our child pushes every button, punishment can feel automatic.
But here’s the part we have to be brave enough to see:
Punishment may stop the behavior for a moment, but it doesn’t teach your child what to do next.
It teaches them to fear your anger.
It teaches them to hide their mistakes.
It teaches them that big feelings are met with force.
Discipline is different.
Discipline says, “I won’t let you do that, and I’m going to help you learn what to do instead.”
If your child throws a toy, you don’t need to scare them.
You can say, “I won’t let you throw toys. I’m putting this away for now. When your body is calm, we can try again.”
Firm. Calm. Clear.
That is not permissive parenting. That is teaching.
You are not a bad mom because punishment was your first instinct. But you can choose a different next step.
Not perfectly. Just differently.
Save this if you’re trying to break the old cycle.❤️
We all know how hard it is to be consistent.
Life gets busy, and in the moment, it’s so easy to choose what feels easier right now.
But even if we forget again and again, let’s keep reminding ourselves:
Our kids don’t need a perfect parent.
They need a consistent one.
Consistent love.
Consistent boundaries.
Consistent coming back.
That’s what gives our children comfort and security.❤️
