According to Teyf Research & Consulting Group, Omantel has announced the launch of 3 new submarine cables to be operational by the end 2012 to strengthen its position as the 'carrier of carriers' for submarine cables landing in Oman and connecting to the rest of the region. Abdulrahim al Bahlani, GM of wholesale business relations in Omantel said “The rapid growth in our submarine cable business reflects the growing demand of the region for high quality cable networks that can guarantee high speed data transmission of the very highest quality.”

“Omantel is proud to have built a reputation in the region as a 'carrier of carriers' - using our expertise to ensure that Oman has become a gateway to the whole region for world class and efficient telecommunications and data transfer,” Bahlani added.

While mentioning the cooperation between Omantel and its Iranian partner, Pishgaman Kavir Asia, Bahlani said that “We already have international partnerships that have enabled Omantel to provide landing facilities for five international cable systems at sites in Bustan, Seeb, Blue City and at the Musandam peninsula”. One of the most important outcomes of ITU Telecom World 2011 and the Broadband Commission meeting in the opening was the endorsement of measurable broadband targets which covers policy, affordability and uptake:

Making broadband policy universal. By 2015, all countries should have a national broadband plan or strategy or include broadband in their Universal Access / Service Definitions.

Making broadband affordable. By 2015, entry-level broadband services should be made affordable in developing countries through adequate regulation and market forces (for example, amount to less than 5% of average monthly income).

Connecting homes to broadband. By 2015, 40% of households in developing countries should have Internet access.
Getting people online. By 2015, Internet user pe*******on should reach 60% worldwide, 50% in developing countries and 15% in Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

Such targets for ITU member countries and the obligation for setting a national broadband strategy by 2015 could lead to faster broadband development and better economic growth, trade and productivity through all countries around the world, especially the emerging markets and least developed regions.
