It sounds like science fiction, but it's entirely real. The species is called Turritopsis dohrnii, commonly known as the "immortal jellyfish."
When this tiny creature faces starvation, physical damage, or environmental stress, it doesn't die. Instead, it activates a biological reset button. Imagine a butterfly turning back into a caterpillar, or a frog turning back into a tadpole.
How the Biological Reset Works
The magic happens through a rare cellular process called transdifferentiation.
Normal cells are specialized—a skin cell stays a skin cell, and a nerve cell stays a nerve cell. But during stress, Turritopsis dohrnii can alter its cells' identity. Its adult te****le and bell cells transform into completely different types of cells, reverting back to their earliest developmental state.
Standard jellyfish follow a circular lifecycle from egg to stationary polyp to free-swimming adult medusa. But the immortal jellyfish can run this loop backward:
The Melt: The adult jellyfish absorbs its own te****les and bell, shrinking down into a blob-like cyst on the ocean floor.
The Rebirth: This blob transforms back into a polyp—a plant-like stalk anchored to a surface.
The Cloning: This new polyp colony buds and releases brand-new, free-swimming adult medusae.
Because the resulting jellyfish share the exact same DNA as the original adult, they are essentially genetic clones. In theory, this process can go on indefinitely, making them biologically immortal.
The Catch: While they don't die of old age, they aren't truly invincible. They are less than a quarter-inch wide (smaller than a pinky nail), meaning they easily fall victim to predators, diseases, and water pollution before they can finish hitting their reset button.
