Dr. Walter Canon in 1926 coined the term "homeostasis" which is involves various regulatory mecahnism that are responsible for maintaining the normal function and equilibrium within the different organs, organelles, tissues, cells and genes. The regulatory components include various homeostatic controllers which are mediated by the feedback loop mechanisms.

In the GI tract one of the most crucial homeostatic controllers are the Interstitial cells of Cajal.
