The American Petroleum Institute, API, is an American trade body representing the oil and natural gas industry. Among the several activities of API, they set up diverse technical standards, such as measurement methods, standards for the design of pressure vessels, etc. along with industry standards of the engine/motor oil.

API has classified Engine Oil standards into two categories: Gasoline (Petrol) and Diesel.
- Category S stands for 'Spark Ignition', for Petrol
- Category C stands for 'Compression Ignition', for Diesel

In both classifications, the letter S or C is followed by another letter, such as SN or CH. The higher the letter, the more recent the technology of the oil. For newer oils, the higher specification will supersede the lower letter grade. For example, an oil having specification SN, can also be used for vehicles which recommend API SM, SL and SJ.
