Celebrating the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry!

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar Yaghi for their groundbreaking work on Metal–Organic Frameworks (M*Fs), porous crystalline materials that have revolutionized how we capture gases, purify water, and design smart materials.

What’s fascinating is that the foundation for understanding M*Fs lies in one of our very own school concepts, the Solid State chapter!

Through Scholarlab simulations, these principles come alive — students can visualize how metal ions and organic linkers form intricate lattice structures, explore void spaces, and see how materials behave at the atomic level. The innovative technique used in the simulation for the layer separator actually helps users to understand the exact placement of particles creating the 3-D structure.

It’s inspiring to see how what begins as a classroom concept can one day lead to a Nobel-worthy discovery.
