🚀 Secure Remote IP Phones Without Public SIP - Yes, It’s Possible
Most remote VoIP deployments still rely on:
• Public SIP exposure
• Port forwarding
• Risky firewall rules
• Overcomplicated VPNs
That model is broken.
We recently deployed secure remote IP phones using FreePBX and ZeroTier in a completely untrusted network - no public IP, no firewall control, no port forwarding.
🔐 What made this deployment secure:
✔ FreePBX kept fully private
✔ ZeroTier used as an encrypted overlay network
✔ Ubuntu-based restricted gateway (default-deny)
✔ SIP & RTP never exposed to the internet
✔ Phone behaves exactly like a local office extension
🧠 Why this matters
Public SIP is one of the most abused attack surfaces in VoIP:
• SIP scanning
• Registration hijacking
• Toll fraud
• Credential brute force
By eliminating public SIP entirely, the attack surface drops close to zero.
This architecture proves that enterprise-grade VoIP security is achievable without SBCs or expensive VPNs - if the design is correct.
