Succeeding the Southern Shilaharas in the Konkan were the Goa Kadambas, who were also devout patrons of Jainism. Alongside the local Jain communities in the region, several Gujarati Jain merchant communities settled along the major trade route that connected Gopakapattana (the capital of the Kadambas) with the upper regions of the Konkan, thus giving rise to vibrant Jain communities in places such as Ponda and Bicholim, where traces of their existence can still be found to this day.Jain Kothi or Jain Tirth a lost Jain Temple from Bicholim Goa It houses the Jain basti dedicated to Suparśvanātha, the 7th Tirthankara. The complex used to consist of a large temple most likely built during the Kadamba reign along with a well or tirtha nearby. The well still exists to this day, but all that remains of the temple are pieces of the lintels, broken doorjambs, and ceiling canopies (in total amounting to around 20 or so pieces), which have survived for almost a millennium. A small stone sculpture of a headless Suparśvanātha was also discovered in the basti, the pedestal of which contains a one-line Nāgarī inscription stating the date of its creation – 1150 AD, which falls during the reign of the Kadamba ruler Permadideva or Sivachitta. The pillars and doorjambs contain beautifully carved Jain symbols and imagery, displaying four-petal flowers, swastikas, elephants, a pair of fish, lions, along with images of Tirthankaras, Yakshas, and Yakshinis.

This rich Heritage site is completely neglected by the Government of Goa and requires urgent attention , many locals are not aware of this ancient historical site in their Village .

Remains of Mahadev temple, Merces Goa 🚩

During Portuguese rule in Goa, Imperialistic powers destroyed many temples in Goa. One of the victims in such destruction was the ancient Mahadev Temple of Village Morombi-O- Grande., Merces Tiswadi Goa, Today the site is in dilapidated condition and under redar of land mafias . There also exists “TALI” sacred bathing lake, now a well which is within the temple premise. There is also a legend associated with this Well , that during this Portuguese inquisition the ancestors of the village secretly managed to hide the Idols and Ornaments of the temple into a secret chamber of the well and this can be still figured out from the stone pattern marked in the video ,as per the locals many tried to unearth the hidden mystery but failed and had to lose their lives in strange circumstances.

According to Literature Sources, Hindu Temples and Deities translated from original in Portuguese by Antonio Victor Couto of Vol- I, History of Goa at No. 25 at page 58 under Items Special News has clearly made mention of ancient temples in village MERCURIM, now known as Merces, The temples of Mahadeva, Santeri, Malcumi (Mahalaxmi), Ravalnatha, Betal, Sati and Metragaddo. It is also mentioned therein that there are no vestiges of transference of these deities.

The Mahadev or Madeu Deity as mentioned that there are no vestiges of the transference of this deity may perhaps deepen down at the same temple or may be existing in the well i.e ‘sacred tali’. Tells Adv. Kripa Gurudas Pilarnekar.

But the main thing here isn’t Portuguese ,but a greedy landlord who wants to convert this site into a Mega Residential area complex . Local youths ,devotees are keen to protect this ancient Temple site but the problem here is most of Goans Don’t know about this place and its Legend . We the lost Goan Temples request our viewers & all the history lovers to kindly visit this temple site and make this place viral so that this issue gets covered by the Higher Authorities .
