MANIPUR VIOLENCE MARKS 3 YEARS; CALLS FOR JUSTICE AND RETURN OF IDPs INTENSIFY

As Manipur marks three years since the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023, public calls for justice and the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their homes have grown stronger.

The anniversary is being observed amid continued hardships faced by thousands of displaced families still residing in relief camps after their houses were burnt and livelihoods destroyed during the conflict.

Recent incidents have further heightened concerns, including the tragic killing of two children in a bomb blast and reports of a sniper attack in Ukhrul district. These developments have added to the ongoing sense of insecurity among the public.

Civil society groups and citizens have reiterated the need for justice for victims and accountability for the violence. They have also urged authorities to take concrete steps to ensure that all displaced persons can return to their homes safely and with dignity.

The day is being marked as a reminder of the prolonged crisis, with growing demands for peace, justice, and restoration of normalcy in Manipur.

NIA Nabs Key Accused in Manipur SDPO Murder Case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a key accused in connection with the 2023 killing of an SDPO in Manipur.

The accused, Otkhothang Baite alias Othang Baite from Moreh, is believed to have played a key role in the conspiracy behind the October 31, 2023 attack on a police team during the peak of ethnic violence.

SDPO Chingtham Anandakumar Singh, who sustained gunshot injuries in the attack, later succumbed.

The case, initially registered by Moreh police, was taken over by the NIA in March 2024. Earlier, another accused, Kamginthang Gangte, was also arrested.

Investigation is ongoing.
