Gangtok’s traffic rules stand out because they actually try to match the city’s geography instead of copying generic city rules.

What works well:
No Honking zones: As you noticed, it cuts noise a lot in a hill town where sound echoes. Fines are enforced, especially around schools, hospitals, and MG Marg. Makes walking way more pleasant.
One-way system in the core: Most of the main bazaar and MG Marg area is pedestrian-only or strict one-way for vehicles. Keeps the narrow roads from complete gridlock during tourist season.
Odd-even or timing restrictions: During peak season they sometimes regulate tourist vehicles and taxis by time slots to prevent choking the uphill roads.
Strict parking: Parking is limited and enforced. Random parking on curves is ticketed because it’s genuinely dangerous on those bends.

Challenges:
The roads are narrow and steep, so even with rules, jams happen when 2 vehicles meet on a blind turn.
Enforcement can be inconsistent once you get outside the main town area.
Tourists not used to hill driving sometimes struggle with lane discipline.

Bottom line: Gangtok’s rules feel more thoughtful than most Indian cities because they’re designed for hills, not flat highways. The “no horn” rule + pedestrian focus gives it a calmer vibe that matches Sikkim’s whole clean-and-green image.
