चांद पर बड़े-बड़े गड्ढे हैं यह गड्ढे हज़ारों की संख्या में हैं उन्हें Lunar crater कहा जाता है

चांद के इन गड्ढों में से कुछ गड्ढों का नाम किसी बड़े वैज्ञानिक (खगोल शास्त्री ) के नाम पर रखा गया है ज्यादा तर नाम इस माडर्न दौर के हैं वहीं बहुत से पुराने वैज्ञानिकों के नाम भी हैं

इन में 24 मुस्लिम नाम हैं जिन में 22 वैज्ञानिक हैं और दो नाम ऐसे हैं जो खुद वैज्ञानिक नहीं थे लेकिन विज्ञान की सेवा के लिए प्रसिद्ध थे इन में एक अब्बासी खलीफा मामून रशीद और दूसरे मशहूर सैलानी इब्ने बतूता का नाम है

सब नाम पुराने हैं सबसे आखिरी नाम मशहूर वैज्ञानिक तैमूर लंग के पोते मिर्ज़ा ओलोग बेग का है जिन का इंतकाल 1449 ईसवी में हुआ था यानी लगभग 600 वर्षों में कोई बड़ा मुस्लिम खगोल शास्त्री नहीं पैदा हुआ
