During Hanukkah, also known as Festival of Lights, the jewish people celebrate two victories: the victory of light over darkness and the victory over the mighty Greek Empire.
When the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) of Jerusalem was liberated from Greek rule, only one jar of oil was found for the menorah in the temple. That oil could only keep menorah of the Temple lit for one day instead of the 8 days needed to make new pure olive oil. People decided to use what they had and have faith, and a miracle happened...it burned for eight days!

Smth fun you should know: Hanukkah takes 8 days, traditional celebration dishes are sufganiyot (doughnuts) and latkes (potato pancakes) and often children receive money (gelt) as present. Children also play with dreidels, a kind of spinning top. Also, the hanukkiah lit on Hanukkah is nine-branched while the menorah of the temple is seven-branched!

This year Hanukkah will be from 13th of December till 20th of December

חג החגים — Festival of Holidays — hag ha-hagim
חֲנוּכָּה — Hanukkah — hanuka
חנוכיה —Hanukkiah — hanukia
לִדלוֹק — to glow, to be on, to burn — ledlok
