The Murrough is a coastal wetland area which is 15km long extending from North of Wicklow Town as far as Greystones. It is the largest coastal wetland complex on the East coast of Ireland and is a magnificent wildlife haven and an outstanding area of natural heritage. You can enjoy wild habitats with salt marshes, mudflats, freshwater and brackish marshes, reed beds, wet grasslands, wet woodland, and alkaline fen.
Attention all on the page and anyone who has an interest in the Save the Murrough Campaign, a post has been shared on the page below regarding a meeting tomorrow - SavetheRocks Vally's Post.....It appears that there is a brief meeting called for tomorrow evening at 7pm in the Council Chambers, Greystones Municipal District, Mill Road Greystones to discuss the proposal of an artifical badget sett and what is involved.
Save the Murrough group have no other information to date, but will phone the County Engineer's Office, Wicklow County Council to enquire further what possible impact this could have for the Murrough project, which runs from Kilcoole Train Station, along the coast 13.5 km to Wicklow Harbour and inwards by 1km in parts to include Broadlough lakes and the Kilcoole Salt Lake marsh Wetlands.
Anyone who is concerned and can make the meeting above in Greystones would be urged to go along to see what is involved first hand in the meantime.
We will report back on this page, if we can shed any more light on this meeting and any other proposed works or any construction that requires Environmental Impact approval by the Dept of Forrestry and Wildlife, which of course is under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Arts, Heritage and Gaeiltacht...
Another look at this post and in tiny print it says that the Council have engaged a consultant to help them to prepare the application for this proposed work, to take in the possible environmental impact on the area...This is where we all need to be vigilant and watch what is happening - the Dept of Forrestry and Wildlife, we underatnd from our conversations with the staff there, will be applying the EU legislation with respect to any work or construction that might impact negatively on specially designated nature protected habitats and wildlife which are protected under the law...including on land or sea that is adjacent to protected areas, we have been told.
The public will still have the right to appeal any decision made to An Bord Pleanala - even if the Dept of Forrestry and Wildlife pass the application or applications.
Hope we can come back with some clarity on what is happening.
