Feeling the pressure during your game? π¦βοΈπ
One thing every chess player experiences, especially in tournaments, is the feeling of pressure when people are watching your board! π Suddenly your game feels 10x more intense when teammates, opponents, coaches or friends stop to see whatβs happening π§π
But remember: this is completely normal and actually part of what makes chess so exciting! π₯
Just like everyone wants to watch the football final and a tense penalty shootout, others are naturally curious about your game too β½
Whether itβs a brilliant attack, a clever tactic or a tense endgame, exciting chess attracts attention! π
The key is learning to stay calm and focused:
β
Take a deep breath
β
Focus on the board and not the audience
β
οΈTrust your thinking process, play as if nobody is watching
Pressure is part of the sport, you will get better at dealing with it the more you experience it πͺβ¨

"Isn't chess a bit boring for kids?" π₯±βοΈ
We hear it all the time. People assume a chess club is just a room full of children sitting silently, staring at wooden pieces π€«
But if you saw the buzz in a Checkmates club, youβd know that couldnβt be further from the truth! ππ
The reality? Kids absolutely love it. To them, the chessboard isnβt boring, itβs a battlefield! βοΈπ
They love the thrill of capturing a major piece, finding a sneaky tactic, delivering a clever checkmate or unexpectedly turning a completely lost game around! ππ₯
They love working out tricky puzzles together as a team, and they live for the excitement of testing their skills and entering tournaments ππ€
Chess is engaging, social and incredibly rewarding ππΌ
Don't let the old stereotypes fool you, chess is one of the most exciting and fun clubs in school! ππΌββοΈ

Beware of chess tunnel vision! ποΈββοΈ
A common mistake almost every beginner makes is taking a tiny snapshot of the board instead of looking at the whole picture πΌοΈ
They spot a juicy pawn they want to capture on the left side of the board, and they get so excited that they completely ignore the enemy Rook waiting to checkmate them on the opposite side of the board! π¨π±
Chess requires "big picture" thinking. To fix beginner tunnel vision, think of your vision like a camera lens:
πΈ Zoom in to look at the exact piece you want to move and the square you want to move to
πΈ Zoom out to scan the entire board for hidden threats from long-range pieces like Bishops, Rooks, and Queens.
Learning to see the whole board takes practice, but it's the ultimate milestone that takes you from a beginner to a more intermediate player! πͺ

The Chess Connection!
Think chess is a solo game? Think again! π§ββοΈ
Chess club is more than just a club, it is it's own special community. Itβs a space for children to gather after school, enjoy great company, learn together and face off over the board, all while sharing a love for chess! π€βοΈ
Here is how our chess club becomes a real social hub every week:
Teamwork: We solve puzzles together, sharing ideas and working things out as a team π§©
Healthy Competition: We practice good sportsmanship. Winning and losing against peers is all part of the game, it teaches valuable lessons while adding to the fun π
CheckMates also organises exciting inter-school tournaments where kids from different schools get together and play. It is amazing to see so many children connecting over chess and all sharing their enthusiasm for the game! ππ«β¨
The chessboard is its own playground and chess club is a great place to make friends and memories! βοΈπ¦π§
Want your child to join the community? DM us to see how we can get a CheckMates chess club up and running at your school! π©

Keep your Queen safe! ππ‘οΈ
The Queen is the most powerful piece on the board, but bringing her out too early often ends badly!
If she gets trapped and captured early in the match, the game is almost 100% over! π¦
Generally, we should not develop our Queen too early in the game while there are still a lot of pieces on the board who will try and capture her.
You can also lose a lot of valuable time dodging attacks from other pieces when you could be developing your other pieces instead ππββοΈ
It is a much better idea to develop your Queen later on when the board clears up! π§ββοΈ
