Thanks to everyone who has been following, liking and sharing these posts. We appreciate you taking an interest in this industry that most people don't get to see up close.

Here's a look around the foundry floor.

For anyone more used to an office environment, it's a different world. It's not neat and tidy. There's gloves and visors, hot metal, dust, and noise.

No hot-desking. No Zoom calls. No work-from-home Fridays. And we haven't got an espresso machine (yet). If a business consultant asked us about a brainstorming session, we'd hand him a shovel.

Just generations of foundry knowledge being put to work. Those anvils will still be around long after all our iPhones have been replaced.

Cast iron lamp bases, and ladder rests.

The decorative base provides the strength for the finished lamp column. The ladder rests were traditionally intended to support ladders during maintenance and lamp servicing.

Practical function with traditional decorative detail. Pieces like these can still be found on streets around Ireland.

From molten metal to finished detail.

This cast iron cross was produced here at Athy Co-op Foundry as a replacement for a church in County Clare, after the original cross was destroyed by a lightning strike.

Here we can see the mold being opened.
