One Story Can Save a Life. đź’ś
This message touched our hearts.
One of our courageous survivors, Emelda Bacchus recently shared her cervical cancer journey through our survivor storytelling activity in recognition of Cancer Survivors month.
She never imagined the impact her story would have on someone else. She recently communicated to us that was approached at the market by a woman who recognized her from the activity.
The woman told Emelda:
“When I heard your story and learned your age, I went and got all my tests done. You inspired me.”
This is exactly why survivor voices matter.
When survivors speak openly about their experiences, they help break the stigma surrounding cancer, replace fear with hope, and encourage others to take the first step toward screening and early detection.
At The Lotus Cancer Initiative Inc., we believe that every story has the power to save lives. Emelda’s courage has already inspired one woman to get screened—and we know she will inspire many more.
To Emelda, thank you for using your voice to make a difference. Your strength is creating a ripple effect that will help save lives across Guyana.
If you’ve been putting off your screening, let today be your reminder. Early detection saves lives. Don’t wait. Get screened. 💜🌸

June is recognized as Fertility Awareness Month.
Cancer and Fertility: Why Early Conversations Matter
🎗️ Cancer treatment can save lives, but it can also affect fertility.
For many patients diagnosed with cancer, the focus is understandably on starting treatment as soon as possible. However, before surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or certain hormonal treatments begin, it is important to discuss how treatment may impact future fertility.
How Cancer Treatment Can Affect Fertility
🔹 Surgery
* Removal of reproductive organs such as the ovaries, uterus, cervix, testicles, or prostate can affect the ability to have biological children.
* Some surgeries can be modified to preserve fertility in carefully selected patients.
🔹 Chemotherapy
* Certain chemotherapy drugs can damage eggs and s***m.
* Women may experience reduced ovarian reserve, early menopause, or infertility.
* Men may experience reduced s***m production or permanent infertility.
🔹 Radiation Therapy
* Radiation directed near the pelvis can damage reproductive organs.
* Fertility may be affected depending on the dose, location, and age of the patient.
Fertility Preservation Options
Before treatment begins, patients should ask about fertility-preserving options, which may include:
For Women
* Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation)
* Embryo freezing
* Ovarian tissue preservation
* Fertility-sparing surgery for selected cancers
For Men
* S***m banking
* Testicular tissue preservation (in selected cases)
The Importance of Early Discussion
⏰ Fertility preservation is most effective before cancer treatment starts. Once treatment has begun, some options may no longer be available.
Every patient deserves the opportunity to:
âś” Understand the potential impact of treatment on fertility
âś” Learn about available fertility-preserving options
âś” Make informed decisions about their future family-building goals
đź’ś A cancer diagnosis should not mean giving up hope for the future. If fertility is important to you, speak with your healthcare team before starting treatment.
