25th MARCH DOUBLE HOLIDAY IN GREECE!!

For the Greek nation March 25th is a double holiday, celebrating a historical achievement and a religious event: The Independence against the Ottoman Empire occupation & the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.

In 1453 the Greeks came under the Ottoman Rule and lead frequent revolts to gain their independence. Up until 1821 there was no hope for liberation but then a secret organization known as Filiki Eteria lead the path to independence followed by the Peloponnese, Crete, Macedonia and central Greece. After many battles and years of negotiations with the three Great Powers, Russia, United Kingdom and France, Greece was finally liberated, becoming a free, independent country in May 1832.

The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary refers to the annunciation by Archangel Gabriel to Virgin Mary that she would soon become the mother of Jesus Christ. The annunciation supposedly happened on March 25th, exactly 9 months before Christmas and therefore is celebrated by the Greek Orthodox Church on this day.

The country marks the double holiday with two typical customs: Parades and the food of the day Bakaliaros Skordalia (Crispy Cod fish with garlic)

El 25 DE MARZO DOBLE FERIADO EN GRECIA!!

Para la nación griega el 25 de marzo es un día de fiesta doble, celebrando un logro histórico y un evento religioso: la independencia contra la ocupación del Imperio Otomano y de la Anunciación de la Virgen María.

En 1453 los griegos cayeron bajo el dominio otomano y conducen frecuentes revueltas para ganar su independencia. Hasta 1821 no había ninguna esperanza de liberación, pero luego una organización secreta conocida como Filiki Eteria lidera el camino hacia la independencia seguidos por el Peloponeso, Creta, Macedonia y Grecia central. Después de muchas batallas y años de negociaciones con las tres grandes potencias, Rusia, Reino Unido y Francia, Grecia fue finalmente liberada, convirtiéndose en un país libre, independiente desde mayo de 1832.

Por otra parte la Anunciación de la Virgen María se refiere a la anunciación del arcángel Gabriel a la Virgen María que pronto se convertiría en la madre de Jesucristo. La anunciación supuestamente ocurrió el 25 de marzo, exactamente 9 meses antes de la Navidad y, por tanto, es celebrado por la Iglesia ortodoxa griega en este día.

El país celebra la fiesta con dos costumbres típicas: Desfiles y la comida del dia Bakaliaros skordalia (pescado crujiente de bacalao con ajos)

Let us begin with a little Greek mythology!
Hermes – son of Zeus, god of thieves and commerce and messenger of Olympus – and Krokos, a mortal youth, were best friends. One day, while the two friends were practicing their discus throwing, Hermes accidentally hit Crocus on the head and wounded him fatally. On the very spot where he was felled, a beautiful flower sprang up. Three drops of blood from Krokos’s head fell on the center of the flower, from which three stigmas grew. This is just one of many origin stories for Crocus sativus, or the saffron crocus, whose crimson stigmas are harvested to make the highly prized spice of the same name.
In ancient Greece, the saffron crocus was considered a rare pharmaceutical plant. Mentions of it in medical writings date from classical Greek and Roman times all the way through the Middle Ages.
Hippocrates and others have noted saffron’s uses as a natural painkiller, aphrodisiac, wound healer and remedy for upset stomach or insomnia.

Comencemos con un poco de mitología Griega!
Hermes - el hijo de Zeus, Dios de los ladrones y el comercio y tambien mensajero del Olimpo y Krokos, un joven mortal, eran muy buenos amigos. Un día , mientras que los dos amigos estaban practicando su lanzamiento de disco, Hermes accidentalmente lo golpeo en la cabeza con Crocus y lo hirió fatalmente. En el mismo lugar donde fue derribado. una hermosa flor se levantó. Tres gotas de sangre de la cabeza de Krokos cayeron en el centro de la flor, de la que tres estigmas crecieron . Esta es sólo una de las muchas historias del origen de Crocus sativus, o el azafrán, cuyos estigmas carmesí se cosechan para hacer el condimento muy apreciado del mismo nombre .

En la antigua Grecia, el azafrán era considerada una planta rara farmacéutica.
Se menciono de él en los escritos médicos de la época griega y romana clásica todo el camino a través de la Edad Media.
Hipócrates y otros han señalado usos del azafrán como un analgésico natural, afrodisíaco, sanador de heridas y remedio para el dolor de estómago o del insomnio.
