This 33 RPM record by , Ouéléle… Souskaï, was produced and realized by him in Paris. This marks Marius’ first contact with Europe, as he had always lived in the Americas. Indeed, after his initial success in the Antilles, where he was born, he quickly gained recognition in America as a pianist, organist, singer, and also as a bandleader, arranger, and composer.
Marius Cultier, a Martiniquais who makes “modern Afro-Antillean music?” wrote an American newspaper, highlighting both his originality and his universality. Commenting on Marius’ performance at the Place des Nations before 15,000 people (Montreal: Terre des Hommes; From Rock to Soul Festival), this famous Place des Nations had hosted artists such as Dionne Warwick, Mongo Santamaría, B.B. King, Charlebois, and many others.
Marius Cultier started very young: at the age of 15, the radio entrusted him with a regular program, which allowed him to deepen his experience in composition, arrangements, and piano techniques. After numerous tours in the Caribbean and South America, where he won first prize at the International Piano Contest in Puerto Rico, he left for North America. Upon arrival, Radio-Canada regularly engaged him for the show Jazz en liberté, listened to by millions of audiences in Canada, the U.S., and Germany, followed by a series of variety shows.
He participated in international artistic events (Montreal, Toronto, New York, Boston, California). He rubbed shoulders with artists like Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, etc. He was seen at various festivals such as Expo 67, Pop Festivals, Terre des Hommes (Trinidad and Tobago Pavilion), and Place des Arts in Montreal. He became a regular on popular radio and TV programs and university and municipal cultural circles in America, making himself known to the general public.
After Marius au Québec (London Records) and Marius Cultier à la Place des Arts (Transworld Records), here is Marius Cultier à Paris in Ouéléle… Souskaï, a lively and spicy album, just like this Antillean dish called souskaï.
