“Dogs with Wings”

Fake flowers and real tears
I drove for hours
don’t know how I got here
How I got here

The air was cool
Your hands were hot
The sky was open
The roads were blocked
I knew I was changing

I stayed too long
I left too early
I’m not sure
if it hurt or helped me

The flowers that grow
In the cemetery rows
They grow anyway
If dogs don’t get wings
At the end of everything
Then what the hell is heaven for
Anything can happen
that’s all it ever does

The cigarette in your left hand
wild hair tucked behind your ear
The sun was hot on my arm
Driving south

I was invited
The police were called
You told me it was all your fault
I left with nothing more

I stayed too long
I left too early
I’m not sure
if it hurt or helped me

The flowers that grow
In the cemetery rows
They grow anyway
If dogs don’t get wings
At the end of everything
Then what the hell is heaven for
Anything can happen
that’s all it ever does

The ghosts that scare me the most
Are the words stuck in my throat

Memory is a beast
A stranger asking me
Why shoes hang from the wire above
I tell him I don’t know
But the concrete is hot
and I really need to go
Anything can happen
that’s all it ever does
All it ever does
Until we are done
