The World Maritime University–Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (WMU-GOI), together with the Seychelles Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy, hosted a High-Level Roundtable and BBNJ Clinic Workshop in Victoria, Seychelles.
The event, titled “From Agreement to Action: Supporting Indian Ocean and African SIDS and Coastal LDCs in the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement,” brought together participants from over 30 countries countries to strengthen capacity for implementing the BBNJ Agreement — the landmark UN treaty on marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, which entered into force on 17 January 2026.
Discussions highlighted the important leadership role of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the need for stronger regional cooperation, sustainable financing, scientific collaboration, and inclusive partnerships to support effective ocean governance and conservation.
The event was convened under the Ireland WMU–GOI BBNJ Clinic Programme with support from the Government of Ireland, The Nippon Foundation, and IUCN partners.
