๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฆด โ€œIs it just slowing downโ€ฆ or is it pain?โ€ ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿพ

We hear this a lot:
๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œHeโ€™s just getting older.โ€
๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œShe doesnโ€™t want long walks anymore.โ€
๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œHe sleeps more now.โ€

But hereโ€™s the thingโ€ฆ

Ageing itself isnโ€™t painful. Arthritis is.

Many changes we put down to โ€œslowing downโ€ can actually be subtle signs of discomfort:

โš ๏ธ Hesitating before jumping in the car
โš ๏ธ Taking longer to get up from bed
โš ๏ธ Avoiding stairs
โš ๏ธ Shorter walks than usual
โš ๏ธ Being grumpier when touched
โš ๏ธ Licking at joints
โš ๏ธ Sleeping more but seeming less comfortable

Dogs are incredibly good at adapting. They reduce their activity to avoid pain โ€” which can make it look like normal ageing.

The earlier we recognise these changes, the sooner we can help ๐Ÿ’™

With the right combination of:
โœ… Weight management
โœ… Targeted strengthening
โœ… Hydrotherapy
โœ… Pain management support
โœ… Home adjustments

We can improve comfort, mobility and quality of life โ€” often dramatically.

If youโ€™re not sure whether itโ€™s โ€œjust ageโ€ or something more, weโ€™re always happy to chat ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฆด Arthritis: Good Days vs Not-So-Good Days ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿพ

If your dog has osteoarthritis, youโ€™ve probably noticedโ€ฆ some days they seem almost back to normal ๐Ÿ’™

And other days?
Theyโ€™re slower getting up.
They hesitate on stairs.
They donโ€™t quite want their usual walk.

This is completely normal. Arthritis isnโ€™t the same every single day โ€” inflammation can fluctuate depending on activity levels, weather, rest, and even excitement (hello zoomies ๐Ÿ‘€).

โœจ A good day might look like:
๐Ÿพ Willingness to walk further
๐Ÿพ Easier transitions from lying to standing
๐Ÿพ Brighter, more playful behaviour

โš ๏ธ A quieter day might look like:
๐Ÿพ Stiffness after rest
๐Ÿพ Slight lameness
๐Ÿพ Slower pace on walks
๐Ÿพ Less enthusiasm for jumping or stairs

The goal of rehab and arthritis management isnโ€™t perfection โ€” itโ€™s more good days than bad ๐Ÿ’™

With the right combination of:
โœ… weight management
โœ… controlled exercise
โœ… strengthening work
โœ… pain management support
โœ… hydrotherapy

We aim to stabilise those ups and downs and keep your dog as comfortable and active as possible.

If youโ€™re noticing more bad days creeping in, donโ€™t wait โ€” small adjustments can make a big difference ๐Ÿถโœจ

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿฆด Recovery Milestones After Orthopaedic Surgery ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿพ

One of the most common questions we get asked is:
โ€œIs my dogโ€™s recovery on track?โ€ ๐Ÿ’™

Every dog heals at their own pace, but recovery after orthopaedic surgery often follows gradual milestones like these:

โœจ Early stage (weeks 1โ€“2)
โœ… Controlled rest
โœ… Short lead walks only
โœ… Managing swelling and comfort
โœ… Gentle weight bearing beginning

โœจ Mid stage (weeks 3โ€“6)
โœ… Improved confidence placing the limb
โœ… Gradual muscle activation
โœ… Controlled strengthening begins
โœ… Increased comfort on short walks

โœจ Later stage (6+ weeks onwards)
โœ… Building strength and endurance
โœ… Improved muscle mass
โœ… Better balance and stability
โœ… Gradual return to more normal activity (under guidance)

Recovery isnโ€™t always perfectly linear โ€” there can be good days and quieter days โ€” and thatโ€™s completely normal ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’™

The key is controlled progression, consistency, and guidance to protect healing tissues while rebuilding strength safely.

If youโ€™re unsure whether your dog is progressing as expected, weโ€™re always happy to help review and support their rehab plan ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพโš–๏ธ Weight Matters โ€” and Weโ€™ve Got Support! โš–๏ธ๐Ÿพ

Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important things you can do for your dogโ€™s joints and overall comfort โ€” especially if theyโ€™re dealing with osteoarthritis, lameness or mobility issues ๐Ÿ’™
Excess weight puts extra strain on joints, which can worsen pain and reduce stamina, making movement harder and recovery slower.

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re proud to support the Pet Fit Club โ€” a structured weight management programme designed to help pets lose, gain or maintain a healthy weight with professional guidance.

The Pet Fit Club includes:
๐Ÿ“Œ full health checks
๐Ÿ“Œ body condition scoring
๐Ÿ“Œ a personalised diet and exercise plan
๐Ÿ“Œ follow-up weigh-ins and support to track progress
๐Ÿ“Œ support with balanced nutrition and lifestyle adjustments
๐Ÿ“Œ aims to reduce fat while keeping lean muscle โ€” ideal for joint support and mobility.

Weโ€™re proud to be a practice that supports this programme, because weight management is such a powerful tool alongside rehabilitation work here at Rase Rehab ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’ช
๐Ÿ‘‰ If youโ€™d like help reviewing your dogโ€™s weight, joining Pet Fit Club, or building a tailored plan that works with their arthritis or rehab goals โ€” please get in touch!

๐Ÿฆด Arthramid Treatment for Canine Osteoarthritis โ€“ Available at Rase Vets

At Rase Vets, we offer Arthramid joint injections as part of our ongoing commitment to improving comfort and mobility in dogs living with osteoarthritis.

Arthramid is an advanced, long-acting treatment designed to support joint health and help dogs move more comfortably and confidently.

๐Ÿงฌ What is Arthramid?

Arthramid is a specialised hydrogel that is injected directly into the joint by one of our veterinary surgeons, Stacey. It integrates into the joint lining, helping improve joint stability and function over time.

To ensure the injection is placed accurately and comfortably, patients are admitted for a short sedation, making the procedure safe and stress-free.

๐Ÿ’ฅ How Arthramid helps arthritic joints

โ€ข Improves joint stability and shock absorption
โ€ข Reduces inflammation within the joint
โ€ข Improves lubrication and reduces discomfort
โ€ข Supports smoother, more comfortable movement

Many dogs experience significant improvement lasting 12 months or longer following treatment.

๐Ÿ• Arthramid may benefit dogs with:

โ€ข Osteoarthritis
โ€ข Stiffness or slowing down
โ€ข Ongoing joint pain
โ€ข Mobility decline
โ€ข Patients also undergoing rehabilitation support

๐Ÿค Rehabilitation support through Rase Rehab

Following joint injections, patients can be supported through Rase Rehab, where tailored physiotherapy and hydrotherapy programmes help improve strength, mobility, and long-term outcomes.

If your dog is showing signs of arthritis or mobility changes, there are options available to help.

๐Ÿ“ž Please contact Rase Vets to discuss whether Arthramid may be suitable for your dog.

๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿฆด Why Warm Water Helps Stiff Joints ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿ’ฆ

Warm water isnโ€™t just relaxingโ€ฆ it can be a real game changer for dogs with stiffness, arthritis, or recovering from injury or surgery ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

In hydrotherapy, the warm water helps by:
โœ… Encouraging muscles to relax
โœ… Reducing stiffness and improving comfort
โœ… Supporting easier movement and joint mobility
โœ… Increasing circulation to soft tissues
โœ… Allowing controlled exercise with less joint impact

For many dogs, stepping into warm water means they can move more freely and confidently than they can on land โ€” especially when joints are sore or painful ๐Ÿถโœจ

Hydrotherapy is all about safe, supported movementโ€ฆ with waggy tails included ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพโš ๏ธ Slippery Floors: A Hidden Trigger for Stiffness & Arthritis โš ๏ธ๐Ÿพ

Many dogs struggling with arthritis, weakness, or recovering from surgery find slippery floors one of the hardest things to manage at home ๐Ÿ’™

When pets donโ€™t feel stable under their feet, it can lead to:
๐Ÿพ slipping or splaying
๐Ÿพ hesitating to walk through the house
๐Ÿพ reduced confidence and movement
๐Ÿพ extra strain on joints and muscles
๐Ÿพ increased risk of injury or setbacks

โœจ Simple home fixes that can really help:
โœ… Non-slip mats or runners in key areas
โœ… Rugs on laminate or tile floors
โœ… Grip socks / paw grips (if tolerated)
โœ… Keeping nails trimmed for better traction
โœ… Avoiding rushing or sharp turns indoors

These small changes can make a BIG difference to comfort, confidence and safety ๐Ÿถโœจ

If youโ€™d like advice on making your home more mobility-friendly for your pet, weโ€™re always happy to help ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฉป Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) ๐Ÿฉป๐Ÿพ

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a condition that affects the discs in the spine and can lead to pain, weakness, difficulty walking, and in some cases paralysis.

Itโ€™s most commonly seen in breeds such as Dachshunds, but can affect other dogs too. Early recognition and the right support can make a huge difference ๐Ÿ’™

โš ๏ธ Common signs to look out for:
๐Ÿพ Shivering, yelping or signs of back/neck pain
๐Ÿพ Reluctance to jump, climb stairs or play
๐Ÿพ Wobbly walking or weakness in the legs
๐Ÿพ Dragging paws or knuckling
๐Ÿพ Sudden difficulty standing or walking

Depending on the severity, IVDD may be managed with strict rest and medication, or in more serious cases may require surgical intervention to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.

๐Ÿ’™ Rehabilitation is a key part of recovery
At Rase Rehab, we support dogs through their recovery with tailored plans focused on:
โœ… safe, controlled movement
โœ… strengthening and stability
โœ… rebuilding confidence and mobility
โœ… supporting long-term comfort and quality of life

If youโ€™re worried your dog may be showing signs of IVDD, please contact us or speak to your vet as soon as possible ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฆด Why the โ€œOther Legโ€ Can Be at Risk Too ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿพ

When a dog is sore or recovering from injury or surgery, they naturally try to protect the painful limb by putting more weight through the other legs.

This is called offloading โ€” and while itโ€™s completely normal, it can sometimes lead to new problems over time ๐Ÿ’™

Offloading can cause:
โœ… extra strain on the opposite limb
โœ… muscle imbalance and compensation
โœ… increased stress on joints (hips, knees, elbows)
โœ… stiffness and soreness in other areas
โœ… risk of injury to the โ€œgoodโ€ leg

Thatโ€™s why rehabilitation is so important โ€” we donโ€™t just focus on the injured limb, we support the whole body to encourage safe, balanced movement and reduce compensation patterns ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’ช

If your dog is recovering from injury or surgery and youโ€™re worried about their movement, weโ€™re here to help ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

Everyone meet Pip ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿพ

This beautiful 4-month-old Parsons Jack Russell has already shown us just how determined she is.

Pip was born breech and, as a result, has some movement restrictions affecting her hind limbs. But from the moment she started her hydrotherapy journey, she has approached everything with confidence and the sweetest little attitude.

With regular hydrotherapy sessions and a tailored home exercise programme, she is already coming on in leaps and bounds. Her hind limb movement is improving beautifully, her strength is building, and her coordination is developing week by week. Watching her progress at such a young age is incredibly rewarding.

Early intervention makes such a difference, and Pipโ€™s owners truly are amazing. Their dedication, consistency and commitment to her rehabilitation match my own, and that teamwork is exactly what gives puppies like Pip the very best chance at a strong, active future.

Please join me in welcoming this gorgeous girl to Rase Rehab and wish her all the luck on her journey. Letโ€™s help give this puppy the happy, healthy life she deserves ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿถ
