Dyslexia My Dyslexia
Hypothesis:
It is rare to meet a retail designer with more than 10-15 years experience as we tend to drift into managerial roles (whether these are project management, account management or team leadership).
My hypothesis is that this is a bad thing for the individuals as well as the industry: Bad for the industry as the most experienced people leave design to perform roles that they are not necessarily as suited to and design and technical skills rarely have a chance to reach truly veteran levels. Bad for the individuals as they are leaving a career that they worked extremely hard to enter and likely stop using the creative and technical skills that led them to choosing this career in the first place.
This is distinct from architecture and engineering, which are structured very differently. In architecture the senior partners are still practicing architects who provide direction and creative and technical input into projects. In engineering firms there are usually parallel managerial and technical paths where engineers have opportunity to develop their technical skills throughout their careers.
My questions:
· Does the initial statement match your experience within the industry?
· If so, do you feel that this is a good thing for the individuals?
· How do you feel about the path that your career has taken – would you prefer to be doing something else now?
· What effects do you think this has on our industry?
· Why do you think this drift happens?
· Do you feel that there are alternate models that we could use that would serve the individuals and industry better?
· Do you know any organisations that are structured differently that I could approach?
