Ethiopia Holds First National Electronic Warfare Workshop, Emphasizes Electromagnetic Spectrum Dominance

Addis Ababa — The Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) has intensified efforts to strengthen the country’s electronic warfare (EW) capabilities, recognizing the domain as a critical matter of national survival in modern warfare.

Speaking at the first-ever National Electronic Warfare Workshop held on Tahsas 25, 2018 (Ethiopian Calendar), Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, stated that electronic warfare has become an indispensable pillar of contemporary conflict, requiring sustained national focus and investment.

The workshop was convened under the theme “Electromagnetic Spectrum Dominance for National Sovereignty.” It brought together senior government officials, security leaders, and experts to assess Ethiopia’s current capabilities and chart a strategic path forward.

Field Marshal Birhanu noted that significant work is underway to enhance national capacity in electronic warfare, stressing that mastery of the electromagnetic spectrum is now as vital as dominance on land, sea, air, and cyber domains. He emphasized that building a skilled workforce and equipping institutions with modern technologies are central to safeguarding Ethiopia’s sovereignty.

He further underscored that electronic warfare development should be integrated into the country’s broader Digital Ethiopia 2030 agenda, citing the program’s progress and tangible results as a foundation for advancing national defense technologies.

The Chief of Staff also called for consolidating fragmented national capabilities and prioritizing domestic production, highlighting the importance of self-reliance in critical defense technologies.

Describing the workshop as timely and historic, Field Marshal Birhanu said it lays a strong foundation for aligning Ethiopia’s accumulated experience with rapidly evolving global technologies in the electronic warfare domain.

For his part, Ambassador Redwan Hussein, Director General of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), delivered an in-depth briefing on global and historical trends, explaining that in today’s dynamic international environment, technological superiority—particularly control of the electromagnetic spectrum—determines strategic power and influence.

Ambassador Redwan stressed that ensuring Ethiopia’s genuine sovereignty requires competitiveness in electronic warfare, urging that ongoing efforts in the sector be further strengthened and sustained.

The event also featured welcoming remarks by W/o Tigist Hamid, Director General of the Ethiopian Defense Engineering Industry Corporation (EDEIC).

The workshop was attended by senior officials including Federal Police Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael, high-ranking government and military leaders, security and intelligence officials, and subject-matter experts, underscoring the national importance attached to electronic warfare as an emerging frontier of defense.

Strong Criticism Mounts Against TPLF Over Historical and Ongoing Actions

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) continues to face severe criticism for what many describe as a long record of political betrayal, strategic miscalculations, and the exploitation of civilians for narrow political objectives.

Critics argue that in the past, the TPLF openly positioned itself against the Ethiopian state by aligning with hostile external forces. During a critical period in the country’s history, the organization is accused of siding with Egypt-backed movements, including the Eritrean liberation fronts, actions that ultimately contributed to Ethiopia losing direct access to the sea. This alignment is widely viewed as having undermined Ethiopia’s national interests and long-term strategic sovereignty.

Today, similar accusations persist, but with even more alarming humanitarian implications. Observers and community leaders state that the TPLF is deliberately politicizing humanitarian suffering in Tigray, using hunger and deprivation as tools of political leverage. Rather than prioritizing the welfare of civilians, the group is accused of subjecting innocent people—its own constituency—to hardship in order to sustain political narratives, attract international sympathy, and maintain relevance.

Many Ethiopians emphasize that the people of Tigray are victims not of the Ethiopian state, but of a political organization that repeatedly places ideology and power above human life. The continued manipulation of suffering for political gain is being described as morally indefensible and politically destructive.

As a result, calls are growing for the complete political dismantling of the TPLF as an organization. Critics argue that Ethiopia cannot achieve lasting peace, unity, and stability as long as armed political movements that thrive on division, external alliances, and internal destabilization remain active. They stress that accountability, political reform, and the rejection of extremist agendas are essential for the country’s future.

The demand, many assert, is not against the people of Tigray, but against a political structure that has repeatedly demonstrated hostility toward Ethiopia’s national cohesion and the well-being of its citizens.

Former Disaster Management Commissioner, Wife, and Daughter Sentenced for Large-Scale Corruption

HornCurrent News | Addis Ababa

A high-profile corruption case involving former Commissioner of the National Disaster Risk Management Commission, Mitiku Kasa, has concluded with heavy prison sentences handed down to him and his family members.

The court found Mitiku Kasa and his family guilty of embezzling large amounts of humanitarian aid funds and relief supplies. The verdict brings to an end a lengthy legal process that exposed widespread corruption within the household.

Mitiku Kasa was sentenced to 13 years in prison. His wife received 8 years and 4 months, while their daughter was sentenced to 5 years and 3 months.

According to the court documents, the family siphoned off emergency aid resources—including food and funds—and diverted them for personal gain. Investigations revealed that the stolen assets were used to construct houses and multi-storey buildings in Addis Ababa and other locations.

Authorities described the case as one of the most serious corruption scandals involving officials responsible for managing disaster relief operations.
