A client walking out the door doesn't end your liability. What you put in your disengagement letter does.
Most accountants either skip it entirely or use vague language that creates more problems than it solves. A missing effective date, unspecified scope, or unclear outstanding work statement and your firm is exposed long after the relationship has ended.
FigsFlow has put together a complete checklist of the eight things every disengagement letter must include plus a ready-to-use template built specifically for UK accountants.
Every section covered. Add your firm details and it's ready to send.

Most accountants write client references without ever reading the guidance. ICAEW and ACCA both have clear frameworks for what you can legitimately say and what you must never include. The gap between the two is where professional liability begins.
A disclaimer alone won't protect you. If your client asked you to write the reference for a third party, a dual duty of care can arise and that changes everything.
Know what both frameworks permit before you put your name to anything.

Most accountants know the rules have changed. Far fewer have actually registered. HMRC's new powers aren't just about penalties, they include the ability to publicly name advisers who get it wrong. In a profession where reputation is everything, that's the part that should concern you most. The portal is live. The clock is running. Are you registered?

Money laundering isnβt just a criminal issue β itβs a frontline compliance risk for UK accountants.
Criminals depend on professional credibility, which is why accounting firms are frequently targeted. Understanding how laundering works and what regulators expect is essential to protecting your practice under MLR 2017.
Strong AML isnβt box-ticking. Itβs about defensible judgement, clear processes, and accountability.

This is not about tax avoidance.
Itβs not about fraud.
Itβs about professional judgement.
From 2026, UK tax advisers could face criminal sanctions, loss of registration, and seven-figure penalties for getting complex tax law wrongβeven where there is no dishonesty.
ICAEW has described this as an βexistential threat to mainstream firms.β That alone should give the profession pause.
Is this proportionate regulationβor are advisers being unfairly exposed while bad actors slip through the net?

Here's the uncomfortable truth:
You're not losing clients because your proposals are bad.
You're losing them because you forgot to follow up.
(Or followed up too late. Or too aggressively. Or inconsistently.)
The average accounting practice wastes 4 hours monthly just chasing proposals.
30-45 manual follow-up emails.
Clients falling through cracks.
Money left on the table.
What if you could automate the entire process?
Set it once β FigsFlow follows up automatically β Close more deals.
