A huge thank you to Juliette Reeves for last night's fantastic webinar.
As we heard there are five stages in a women’s life during which changes in hormone levels make them more susceptible to oral health problems and pregnancy is one of them.
70% of women experience pregnancy gingivitis, which if left untreated this can cause more serious complications, including premature labour and a low-birth weight.
Research suggests that a staggering 20% of premature births are triggered by gum disease.
A combination of hormonal changes and a surge in blood flow, most commonly during the second trimester, leads to plaque building up around the base of the tooth causing puffy and bleeding gums. Excessive bacteria can enter the bloodstream via sore gums, travelling to the uterus, triggering the production of chemicals which can induce labour.
The Gengigel range of products utilise the natural therapeutic benefits of hyaluronic acid to provide welcome relief from the discomfort and pain of pregnancy gingivitis.
Clinically proven to heal inflamed or damaged gums, Gengigel delivers a 50% reduction in bleeding gums within 7 days. It is safe to use in pregnancy, when breastfeeding and in young children.

Oestrogen provides a key, protective role in many different systems in our bodies: the brain, skin, bones, heart, urinary functions, and the ge***al area – That's why as we enter the peri/menopause phase and our levels of oestrogen decline it can affect all these parts of our bodies, including our mouths.
Have you noticed any changes to your oral health recently, are your gums feeling more sensitive, or bleeding more frequently? Perhaps you’ve noticed a change in your taste or a burning sensation in your mouth.
The mouth contains oestrogen receptors and so variations in hormone levels can, directly and indirectly, affect the oral cavity culminating in symptoms such as; a greater sensitivity, along with a decreased saliva flow which can result in dry mouth and gingivitis.
To keep your gums and teeth healthy during this stage of fluctuating hormones we urge you to take note of your symptoms and act on them, if something is particularly troublesome seek advice from your dentist or hygienist and remain extra vigilant with your daily oral hygiene:
- Brush your teeth for a good 2 minutes a day, using a timer on your phone can help.
- Use a good quality toothpaste containing fluoride.
- Clean in between your teeth with either interdental brushes or floss, to ensure you remove all food debris and bacteria.
- Use an alcohol-free mouth rinse twice a day, at different times from brushing.
- Try to stick to 3 healthy meals a day, where possible avoiding sugar and sugary drinks.
Gengigel is a clinically proven range of oral health products which soothe, heal and protect sore, inflamed gums.
