Small changes can remove big barriers.

This World Autism Acceptance Month, we’re focusing on how workplaces can better support autistic people to thrive.

Everyone experiences work differently. Adjustments should remove the barriers an individual faces, not follow a one-size-fits-all checklist.

Here are some workplace adjustments that can make a real difference:

• Flexible working
Fixed hours or locations can create barriers. Flexibility can help remove these.

• Clear structure and communication
Unclear tasks or changing expectations can create barriers. Clear instructions and consistency make a difference.

• Sensory environments
Noise, lighting or busy spaces can be overwhelming. Quieter spaces or small changes to lighting can help.

• Consistent workspaces
Hot desking can create barriers for some people. Having a consistent workspace can support comfort and focus.

These changes don’t just support autistic people, they help create better, more inclusive workplaces for everyone.

If you’re thinking about how your workplace could do more, we can help.

We’d like to say a massive AFK thank you to Chiltern Railways for the incredible support they provide for the disabled and neurodiverse young people we work with. A group of fantastic employees from across the company gave up their time and welcomed us to Marylebone Station on Friday for an impactful careers insight day.

Young people took a guided tour of the station and back office and learned about the range of roles that exist in the rail industry and the skills required to enter the profession.

We all learned so much about how the station and the line operates and were treated to stepping on a brand new Mark 5A train. What a great day. We picked up lots of new knowledge and careers advice (plus goody bags and cupcakes)! This was all funded by a generous grant from the Chiltern Railways Community Investment Fund.

Our young people face many barriers to entering the workplace and opportunities like this make so much difference to their skills, confidence and networks. We’re incredibly grateful.
