I’ve just sent off a petition to the Government asking them to mandate that U.K. supermarkets lower their prices, because food has become an unaffordable “luxury”.👇🏼

Having worked in both adult street homelessness settings and youth crisis homelessness services, I’ve seen first-hand how utterly unreachable even the most basic items already have been for so many people. And now, for the average earner, things honestly aren’t feeling much different.

Food prices have become utterly RIDICULOUS. Last night, doing an online shop, I saw a basic standard Co-op cheddar for £6.07!!!!! This is insane.

And while the average person is now sacrificing essential parts of life because of these completely unethical rises, what does that mean for all the former clients I used to support? People who - before these huge increases - regularly had to choose between food or covering transport to the Job Centre or college. People who were so hard up they’d steal toilet paper from our staff toilet (which we always turned a blind eye to and kept stocked).

No one should be struggling for bare necessities. Yet here so many of us are, having to sacrifice the rest of the month if, God forbid, dishwasher tablets and washing machine tablets fall in the same week’s shop. It’s not good enough. In a supposedly affluent, “forward” country, why are so many of us struggling?

So this morning I had this idea - and ran with it.

I need a minimum of 5 signatures before the petition even gets checked by the Petitions Team. But honestly, why stop there? Let’s share it far and wide and flood them.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough - and my heart breaks for those in even worse situations.

If you, like me, refuse to accept these prices as the “new normal” when wages aren’t rising to even match, then please sign.
