The World Health Organization estimates around 118 million blood donations are collected globally each year, yet shortages still remain a major challenge across healthcare systems worldwide.

Blood donations support much more than emergency care, it's also used across some clinical research as well. Whether for a study intervention, as a source of biological samples, or as part of transfusion and blood supply optimisation research.

An example of this is the UK INTERVAL trial, evaluating whether the frequency of whole blood donation could be safely increased or decreased. The studyโ€™s findings help to improve the well-being of blood donors and enhance blood supplies.
