Liverpool Magistrates Courts
The former Liverpool Magistrates' Court, a Victorian architectural masterpiece that served as a cornerstone of the city's legal system for over 150 years. Designed by Liverpool Corporation surveyor John Grey Weightman and constructed between 1857 and 1859, this iconic Grade II listed building is celebrated for its striking classical facade, ashlar stone masonry, and grand granite plinth.
Located at the bustling junction of Dale Street and Hatton Garden, the courthouse was the primary hub for Liverpool’s local justice system, handling millions of minor offences, civil disputes, and traffic cases. At its operational peak, the historic building housed seven ornate courtrooms, majestic waiting halls, and a maze of dark basement holding cells complete with vaulted brick ceilings and centuries of original graffiti carved by the accused.
After more than a century and a half of continuous service, judicial activity officially ceased in June 2015. To modernise legal operations, all magistrate proceedings were integrated into the nearby Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts in Derby Square, creating a singular, digital-ready justice centre for the city.
Following a decade of vacancy, this prized piece of Liverpool heritage is undergoing a spectacular multi-million-pound transformation. Acquired by local property specialists JSM Group, the historic site is being meticulously repurposed into a luxury 111-bedroom boutique hotel. The ambitious, heritage-led redevelopment will sensitively preserve the building's stunning architecture, transforming the atmospheric holding cells into themed guest suites, while repurposing the historic grand courtrooms into unique public restaurants and bars.
