Decisive action to break influence of gas on electricity prices 21/04/2026

🚨 Big changes coming to energy prices

The government has just announced plans to stop gas prices controlling electricity prices… and it’s about time.

👉 What’s the problem now?
Even though loads of our electricity comes from cheaper renewables like wind and solar, the price you pay is still set by gas.
So when gas goes up, everything goes up.

👉 What are they doing about it?
• Moving older renewable generators onto fixed price contracts
• So they’re not getting paid inflated gas driven rates
• Covering around a third of the UK’s electricity supply

👉 Extra measures
• Increasing windfall tax on generators from 45% to 55%
• Using that money to support households and businesses

👉 Why it matters
Gas prices are volatile due to global issues, wars, supply problems etc
But we’re still paying for it even when using cheap electricity sources

This change is meant to:
✔ Reduce bills
✔ Protect people from price spikes
✔ Push the UK further towards clean energy

👉 The reality
This won’t fix bills overnight, but it’s a big step in the right direction.
Long term, the more we rely on electric heating and renewables, the more this kind of change matters.

Decisive action to break influence of gas on electricity prices Families across the country will be better protected from energy crises, as government moves to break link between gas and electricity prices.

Frozen condensate pipes are one of the most common boiler problems during cold weather.

When the temperature drops the condensate pipe outside can freeze. When that happens the boiler shuts down as a safety measure and the house goes cold even though the boiler itself is fine.

A quick temporary fix is to gently pour warm water over the frozen section of pipe. Do it slowly and never use boiling water. Once it thaws the boiler can usually be reset and will fire back up.

The proper fix is preventing it happening again. Insulating the pipe increasing the fall or rerouting it internally where possible makes a big difference and avoids repeat breakdowns every winter.

If this keeps happening it is worth getting it sorted properly before the next cold snap rather than waiting for the boiler to shut down again.

From October through to December we get loads of calls from homeowners saying their boiler keeps losing pressure.

After sitting idle all summer, it’s common for heating systems to drop pressure once they’re switched back on. Expansion vessels go soft, pressure relief valves start weeping, and a bit of air sneaks in over time.

Here’s a short, straight-talking guide that explains what might be going on and when it’s time to call an engineer.
