This Deaf Awareness Week (4 -10 May), we are focusing on the job gap for Deaf people.

According to the RNID, only 37% of people who report BSL as their main language are in work, compared with 77% of those who are not disabled under the Equality Act.

This issue isn’t about ability; it’s about access.

Simple changes like captions, BSL interpreters, and clear communication can help make workplaces more inclusive for everyone.

The Scottish Parliament election is a week away, and the six major parties have all set out their priorities in manifestos.

We’d like to throw two more into the mix.

First, the Third Sector Employability Framework’s manifesto, which pursues their vision of an employability eco-system where local third sector services are trusted and supported to play a central role in tackling poverty and helping to grow fair, sustainable communities and Scotland’s economy.

The second manifesto, produced by our Autism Advisory Group, embodies the TSEF’s call to value lived experience. With the aim of making work neuro-inclusive, the manifesto sets out asks including improved employer training and greater support to recruit, retain, and progress autistic talent.

Regardless of the outcome of next week’s election, we look forward to working with the next Scottish Parliament and Government to close the disability employment gap!
