TRANSGRESSIVE CULTURES CONFERENCE III
CALL FOR PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS
University of Chicago Center in Paris, 6 rue Thomas Mann, 75013 Paris, France
Conference Theme: Transgressive Saints
Dates: Wednesday, December 8th and Thursday, December 9th, 2021*
The image of the saint has long held a transgressive allure – the sacred grace and eroticism of Saint Sebastian, Jean-Paul Satre’s Saint Genet
, q***r saints, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, even Muhammed Ali’s infamous 1968 cover of Esquire magazine. Alongside these figures there are those individuals and figures who become transgressive icons, whether through their art or actions, and who may take on a quasi-transcendent value. For its third instalment the Transgressive Cultures Conference is looking for papers and presentations on Transgressive Saints. Papers on the representation and importance of saints, on the notion of godless spirituality, on saints and the cultural symbolism of saints, suggestions for alternative cannons, anti-religious saints, and the re-interpreted canon, are all encouraged. Papers are also welcomed on the representation of alternative saints and religious transgressions in literature, music, and art: the literary Black Mass, the Diabolus in Musica / the Devil’s tritone, black metal, and unholy architecture, could all offer starting points. We also invite papers on other areas of transgressive culture, philosophy, literature and creative practice. We welcome proposals for alternative forms of presentation – short films, performance, readings etc – and contributions from creative practitioners, although such presentations must still fit into the general conference criteria and recognize the limitations of the conference space, unless otherwise agreed through prior discussion with the conference organizers. Final papers should be no more than 20 minutes in length. Please also tell us about yourself and your activities (a descriptive text, bio or CV). Deadline for proposal submissions: OCTOBER 1st, 2021
Please send your proposals for papers, presentations, performances or other, to the conference organizers:
Jack Sargeant Email: [email protected]
Tom Garretson Email: [email protected]
* Please note that this date is tentative and based on the condition that the current situation with the Covid virus improves. Should Europe continue to be in lockdown mode because of the virus, then we will move the conference to 2022.
