Obituary – Tony Anthony (formerly Anthony Naidu)

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Tony Anthony — a beloved father, grandfather, family man, faithful servant of God, and one of Fiji’s respected boxing champions.

Tony was born on Wednesday, 17 February 1960, in the village of Tubou, Lakeba, Fiji, the fifth child of Ramswami Naidu and Logapila Vusega. He spent his early years growing up between Veisari and Lautoka.

Tony attended Lelean Memorial School in Nausori, where his athletic gifts and fierce determination became evident from an early age. At just 10 years old, he began boxing — the beginning of what would become an extraordinary sporting career.

Known for his courage, discipline, intelligence in the ring, and a heart of true grit, Tony rose to become one of Fiji’s leading professional boxers of the 1980s. Competing professionally in 44 fights, recording 24 wins, 17 losses, and 3 draws, he proudly represented Fiji and later Australia, fighting across the South Pacific and Australia. His achievements included becoming Victorian Welterweight Champion in 1981, earning multiple titles, and establishing a reputation as one of Fiji’s finest lightweight and welterweight fighters of his era. His legacy helped elevate Pacific boxing and inspire future generations of fighters.

Yet beyond the gloves and accolades, Tony’s greatest pride was his family.

At age 20, he became a father to his eldest daughter, Thyra Elizabeth Maki, born in Suva. In 1980, he moved to Australia to begin a life with his beloved wife, Faye. They married in September 1982 and built a beautiful family together, welcoming daughters Kylie Ilana, born in Geelong, Tursha Rowyn, and Saulyn Mere, in Sydney.

Tony was a devoted and loving father — gentle, kind, respectful, and a true gentleman to his daughters. Protective and quietly strong, he loved deeply and gave his family a foundation of love, resilience, and faith.

He was also a faithful man of God, whose trust in the Lord carried him through both triumph and hardship. His life reflected perseverance, grace, humility, and quiet courage.

In August 1988, during what would become his final fight in Suva, Tony sustained a traumatic brain injury that forever changed the course of his life. Yet even in adversity, his fighting spirit never left him. Through God’s grace, Tony lived to watch his daughters grow into women and become the proud grandfather of nine cherished grandchildren — Shanoa, Leandro, Saxon, Kaprice, Tomas, Mateja, Toni, Phillipa, and Gabriel — each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.

On May 5th 2026, at his home in Perth, Tony passed peacefully into eternal rest, surrounded by the love of his children and grandchildren.

Tony will be remembered not only as a champion boxer, but as a champion father, grandfather and faithful Christian. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, dignity, faith, and unconditional love.
