Serotonin-norepinephrine (SNRI) reuptake inhibitors are a class of drugs that are used to treat depression and other conditions:
What they do: SNRIs prevent the reabsorption of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, making more of these chemicals available for the brain to use.
What they treat: SNRIs are used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, social phobia, chronic neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia syndrome, and menopausal symptoms.
How they work: SNRIs keep certain chemical messengers active in the brain.
Side effects: Possible side effects include nausea, changes in appetite, muscle weakness, tremor, agitation, heart palpitations, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, headache, and more.
Serotonin syndrome: SNRIs can trigger serotonin syndrome, a collection of symptoms that can develop after taking certain serotonergic drugs.
Suicidal thoughts: SNRIs have been associated with an increase in suicidal behaviors and thoughts in children and adolescents.
Liver problems: SNRIs have been reported to worsen liver problems.
Serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine are fundamental to normal brain function and have been the center of neuroscientific study for many years.
