Single-Use Plastic Bags Are Officially Banned in Ethiopia
Under the Solid Waste Management and Disposal Proclamation No. 1383/2017, the use, production, import, and sale of single-use plastic bags will be strictly prohibited starting January 31, 2026 (ጥር 23/2018), after the six-month grace period ends.
What the law says
- Individuals caught using or carrying plastic bags face fines
- Businesses producing, importing, or selling plastic bags face heavy penalties
- Repeat or serious violations may lead to imprisonment
What we can do
- Use reusable cloth bags or baskets
- Support businesses offering sustainable alternatives
- Spread awareness in your community
