L-cloud or book cloud is a private commission for a couple of young professionals from Madrid who needed a functional double space to work and to keep their books tidy. Conceptually, the bookcase has been tailored to fit the couple’s desire for a book paradise.

The design mirrors on the clients personalities as well as the apartment location (genius loci). The place is a beautiful high ceiling 1930s apartment with tiled floors in a popular borough of Madrid next to the Rastro which holds a flea market every Sunday. The apartment faces the old Tanners Road with a lovely view of local commerce, vegetation planted throughout the street and with a warm clear light that pervades into the living room.

The composition is well rounded and is based on two inverted L (L for libro=book in Spanish) shaped spaces: one for the bookcase, another for the desk. The choice of materials is a combination of 3mm steel sheets placed horizontally braced by thin steel vertebrae accentuating the verticality of the space and oak with a natural finish. The structure is compact and heavy permitting load bearing but visually thin and light to create the impression of floating books. Aesthetics are hard and industrial but at the same time warm, inviting and carefully assembled and finished.

Two lines of LEDS were built into the unit to create a mild atmospheric lighting and a warm fluorescent lamp was placed over the desk to provide sufficient worklight.

L-cloud o nube de libros es un encargo de una joven pareja de profesionales de Madrid que necesitaban un lugar de trabajo y para mantener todos sus libros ordenados. Conceptualmente, querían algo que se pareciera a un paisaje de libros.

El diseño refleja las personalidades de los clientes así como el espíritu del lugar (genius loci). El apartamento, situado en el popular barrio del Rastro fue edificado en 1930 y posee techos altos y unas baldosas hidráulicas originales que dotan al espacio de un carácter único. En frente, la Ribera de Curtidores con vistas al ajetreo diario del pequeño comercio y el bullicio del rastro y una vegetación alineada en la calle que filtra la cálida luz vespertina hacia el interior.

La composición está basada en dos “L” invertidas (“L” de libro) que cobijan los dos espacios principales de trabajo y de almacenamiento de libros. Los materiales elegidos fueron chapa de acero de 3mm de espesor para los estantes y las costillas verticales que acentúan el ritmo y la verticalidad del espacio; y el roble natural para la zona de trabajo, de mayor uso y por tanto más cálido y acogedor. La estructura es compacta y estable permitiendo la carga de los libros pero visualmente muy etérea y liviana para dar la impresión de libros flotantes. La estética industrial del acero se combina con el acabado natural y fino de la madera.

El conjunto está rematado con la iluminación ambiental por medio de LED y una iluminación directa más cálida sobre el escritorio.
