MEMOLA FP7 Project

on four different areas by the Mediterrenean Sea: Sierra Nevada (Spain), Monti di Trapani (Italy), Colli Euganei (Italy) and Vjosa Valley (Albania). It is composed by ten partners from five different countries. Seven of them are public institutions and three come from the private sector. The project coordination relies on Universidad de Granada under the directive of José María Martin Civantos, professor at the Department of Medieval History and Historiographic Sciences and Techniques. MEMOLA aims to analyze cultural landscapes, taking as a central axis the diachronic study of the relationship between human populations and natural resources – in particular soil and water – that are essential to generate agrosystems. MEMOLA assumes that the logics governing landscapes and their structure are strongly conditioned by the need of ensuring the livelihood of rural communities over time. They are the spatial representation of the social relations that stand behind the social production systems. MEMOLA proposes to understand the landscape by investigating the historical processes that have led to a specific relationship with the environment, aimed at the extraction and use of resources in certain social contexts.
