The Foundation Stage is the period of education from age three and a half to five and a half. It starts in Nursery and ends in the reception year. During this stage, children work towards the early learning goals. Most children are expected to achieve the early learning goals by the end of the foundation stage. Children further their understanding by playing, communicating, observing, questioning, experimenting, and responding to adults and to each others. The Foundation Stage prepares children learning for key stage 1 when British curriculum programs are taught in years 1 and 2.
