Chemical engineering is considered to be a somewhat new discipline, it has existed for less than 150 years but chemical engineers have achieved so much during a short time and affected the world in various ways. By making consumer products more available for everyone, chemical engineers have helped improve the quality of our everyday lives.

Petroleum engineers usually work in the upstream sector and mainly do the exploration and production of the raw materials while chemical engineers usually work in the downstream sector where they are responsible for refining the crude oil and processing and purifying natural gas to produce useful products from these raw materials.

Take a look around you, almost everything in the room is made out of petrochemicals as they can be converted into a variety of industrial and consumer products like plastics, fibers, fertilizers, adhesives, paint, rubber, dyes, textiles, medicines, solvents, appliances, solar panels and automobile parts.
